The Recipe Anyone Could Follow
Maya was ready. But she realised something: if she only sort of talked to a plant sometimes, and sort of watered it whenever, her results would be a mess. Nobody would believe her. She wouldn’t even believe herself.
So she wrote an exact plan — a recipe — that anyone in the world could follow:
- ›Take 2 identical plants — same type, same size, same pot, same soil.
- ›Put both on the same windowsill, so the sunlight is identical.
- ›Give both the same water, same amount, same time each day.
- ›Talk to Plant A for 5 minutes every morning. Say nothing to Plant B.
- ›After 3 weeks, measure the height of each plant with a ruler.
This recipe is called the Methodology (or Methods), and it has one golden rule:
Write it so clearly that a total stranger could copy your exact steps and get the same result.
Why so detailed? Because in research, “trust me, it worked” means nothing. The power of a paper is that someone across the world can repeat your steps and check you. A vague method makes a worthless paper. A crystal-clear method makes a bulletproof one.
Yes, methods sections feel boring to write. That boringness is the point. Boring = repeatable = trustworthy. A thrilling, vague method is a bad method. A dull, precise method is a beautiful one.
Maya’s recipe looked perfect. But a sneaky problem was hiding inside it — one that ruins the work of thousands of researchers every year.
