Abstract

This paper considers the issue of land tenure system in the traditional society of Iwo, an ancient settlement in Osun State of Nigeria. Literature studies and theories on land tenure have been highlighted analyzing the works of different authors who have brought to the fore their various opinions on the subject matter. These include definitions, concepts of land, land tenure, customary, received English and statutory systems. The paper also analysed the system of landholding in Iwo and it’s environ and how it practically affects the growth and development of Iwoland and its neighbours. The paper closes with recommendations to curb hitherto negative effects and sharp practices on land tenure system and its operatives.
