The Evolution and Influence of Artificial Intelligence in Africa: Disruption and Opportunities.
Abstract
The evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Africa has been marked by a gradual but transformative journey, driven by the continent?s unique challenges and opportunities. Initially hindered by infrastructural constraints such as limited internet access and low digital literacy, AI adoption has accelerated over the past decade due to advancements in mobile technology, increased internet penetration, and the rise of tech hubs. Countries like Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa have emerged as pioneers, leveraging AI to address critical issues in agriculture, healthcare, and financial services. For instance, AI-powered platforms such as FarmDrive and Zipline have revolutionized farming and healthcare delivery, respectively, showcasing the potential of homegrown innovation (GSMA, 2020; World Economic Forum, 2021). Collaborations between governments, private sectors, and international organizations have further fostered AI research and development, with initiatives like the African AI Research Institute in South Africa leading the charge (South African Government, 2021). Despite challenges such as limited funding and a skills gap, Africa?s AI ecosystem is rapidly evolving, positioning the continent as a hub for innovative, context-specific solutions that address local needs while contributing to global technological advancements. As a disruptive technology, AI is reshaping traditional systems, creating new opportunities, and driving economic growth, service delivery, and inclusive development across the continent.
