Abstract

Management of poultry waste in residential site requires the removal of unwanted odor that could be released to the environment. This could cause severe air pollution and also constitute a great health hazardous treat to occupants of residence. A novel self-cleaning automatic poultry waste cleaner was developed. The unit consists of a 2 X 6 poultry cells battery cage system, 0.1m3 (100l) overhead tank with 25 mm diameter water piping system linking; a tank, 500 W pressure pump and the two waste collectors for flushing waste into waste receptacles. A digital timer (OMIRON DH48S-S/1Z(H5CN)) and contactor switch of 40 Amps, 220 V/3kW were used to activate and deactivate the flushing system at 10 seconds interval. Timely flushing of waste generated a discharge rate of flushed waste into the upper and lower receptacle collectors; at 145 ? 10-6 m3/s and 59 ? 10-6 m3/s. The discharge effluent flow rate power for both upper and lower receptacle collector were 3.63 and 1.47 Watts; indicating power expended within the flushing system to be 372.91 W. The performance of the unit to timely removal of waste was 100% effective; in that no traces of waste were found in the waste collector thereby removing the unwanted odor from environment. However, there is still need to modify the unit by reducing the volume of flushed water waste of 1.64 ? 10-3 m3 (upper) and 0.58 ? 10-3 m3 (lower) receptacles to a feasible volume for further processing into manure water for irrigation or feedstock for a bio-digester. The system is workable and needs improvement for commercial enterprise in poultry ventures to adopt.
