Environmental Impact of Soil Contamination from Effluent Disposal by Dangote Sugar Refinery in Adamawa State, Nigeria

Abstract

Industrial effluent disposal poses a significant environmental challenge, particularly in developing regions where regulatory enforcement is weak. This study assesses the impact of effluent discharge from the Dangote Sugar Refinery on soil quality in Adamawa State, Nigeria. Soil samples were collected from Gywana Kabawa, SSC, and Boshikiri and analyzed for sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), potassium (K), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), and chromium (Cr) using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). Findings revealed elevated concentrations of heavy metals, with Pb and Cr exceeding permissible limits in some locations. Contamination levels decreased with distance from the refinery, indicating localized pollution effects. The study concludes that industrial effluents significantly degrade soil quality, reducing agricultural productivity and posing risks to food safety. It recommends stricter regulatory enforcement, adoption of advanced wastewater treatment technologies, and collaboration between industries, government agencies, and research institutions to mitigate industrial pollution and promote sustainable environmental management.
