Abstract

Generally, in Nigeria and particularly in Ozoro, the massive population growth has had rippled effect on all aspect of citizens wellbeing, housing being one of the top five indices affected. Housing deficit is not only in numbers but also in poor quality and conditions. The quality of Housing in any locality is an essential aspect of human life because it portrays the general wellbeing in terms of comfort, security, health, welfare and even happiness of the people in that area. This paper aims at examining housing quality in Ozoro in Delta State, Nigeria with the view of identifying and assessing the building construction materials and structural quality new and existing houses; provision and access to basic amenities and infrastructural facilities; housing availability and affordability as well as examining the effect of overcrowding on housing conditions. The methods used in collecting data was basically through the primary and secondary sources which include survey questionnaires, direct observations and detailed personal interviews. Questionnaires were administered to household representatives in selected settlements using the multistage sampling techniques. Data collected through field survey were analyzed using frequencies, percentages while qualitative data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. Findings on the construction materials and structural quality shows that, houses were built using block (87.5%) as wall materials and aluminium sheet (39%) as roof while the basic infrastructure and amenities indicated that 51% of the roads were untarred, with 65% no drainage system; 74% dump their waste in an open space; 97% of irregular or non-existing electricity supply. There are limited housing units for availability leading to overcrowding and informal settlements in certain areas. It is recommended that the government and other stakeholders work in partnership to develop and improve infrastructure and provide essential services; increase investment in affordable housing schemes; and enhance public awareness of housing rights and responsibilities.
