The 2023 annual report from the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) revealed that 87% of all global child sexual abuse imagery identified in that year was hosted in only three countries, with India being one of them. In the same year, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) recorded over 10,000 cases of cybercrime targeting minors, reflecting the growing crisis of child pornography in cyberspace. The rapid explosion of the internet has given rise to a dark and disturbing reality—the surge in child pornography. According to NCRB, India witnessed an alarming 1,600% increase in child pornography cases between 2018 and 2020, with cases skyrocketing from 44 to 738 in just two years. The COVID-19 pandemic had exacerbated this crisis, with cyber predators exploiting digital platforms to target vulnerable children. Despite stringent laws like the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Section 67B of the Information Technology Act, 2000, enforcement gaps and technological loopholes continue to fuel this heinous crime, demanding urgent legal and societal intervention.
