Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly seen as a solution to societal challenges, praised for its efficiency, objectivity, and ability to make decisions free from human error. However, this perception obscures the reality that AI is deeply embedded with human values, reflecting the biases of its creators. This paper argues that AI systems, far from being neutral, are sociotechnical constructs influenced by the social, political, and cultural contexts in which they are developed. The article explores how human biases infiltrate AI through data selection, feature prioritization, and algorithmic design, often perpetuating systemic inequalities. It highlights real-world cases of biased AI outcomes across sectors such as healthcare, hiring, criminal justice, and education. Furthermore, the paper addresses the ethical and philosophical implications of these biases, examining the power dynamics that influence AI development and the need for more inclusive and accountable design practices. By proposing strategies for mitigating bias, such as diverse development teams, transparency, and ethical frameworks, the paper aims to foster the creation of AI systems that serve the public good while ensuring fairness and equity.
