The study entitled ‘Mitigating Urban Heat Island (UHI) Effect through Street Greening in Calabar Municipality. Challenges and Way forward’ focus on the contribution of street or urban trees in the mitigation of urban heat island effect in a bid to promote safe habitation. The study employed qualitative research methodology involving personal observation, interviews mix with robust literature review in an attempt to explore the contribution of street trees on the mitigation of urban heat island effect. The study population included individuals, commuters and business operators within green settlements and non-green settlement within Calabar Municipality. Sample size of 384 was estimated using Slovins’ formula for finite population. The participants were randomly sampled. Copies of questionnaires were administered to all the participants and duly retrieved for data analysis. Descriptive analytical technique involving tables and chart was employed. It was revealed that street trees play a key role in cooling air temperature, reduction of health related heat of wave, filter air, removal of toxic air pollutant and many others. Some certain challenges were identified that affect the management of urban trees particularly high cost of maintenance and protection, illegal logging and frequent litter and the burden of evacuation. The study recommended among others that public-private collaboration along side strong media presence and adoption of advanced technological tools in real time monitoring of trees can aid in the planning and monitoring of urban greening projects.
