Abstract

In this study, we investigated the differences in foaming behavior of mixtures of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with different viscosities. The first mixture, codenamed HV, has a composition high viscosity PVA/low viscosity PVA weight ratio of 9/1, and the second mixture, codenamed LV, has a composition of high viscosity PVA/low viscosity PVA weight ratio of 5/5. The HV foam density decreased almost linearly with increasing CO2 pressure and was not sensitive to variation in processing temperature, which means the HV mixture enjoys a larger processing window. The expansion ratios of LV foams were much smaller than those of the HV foams. Compared to the HV mixture, the LV foam density showed a smaller variation with CO2 pressure and a larger variation with processing temperature. The swelling ratio results showed that the ratios of the HV mixture were smaller than those of the LV mixture under all processing conditions, which means that the cross-linking degree of the PVA mixture with a high proportion of low-viscosity PVA (LV) is much lower. The open-cell ratio results showed that the cell structure of the HV foams was mainly closed-cell, while the structure of the LV foams contained a much higher proportion of open-cell foam structure.
