Abstract

In an era of rising popularity of cover songs and digital accessibility, the need to make the blurry line between inspiration, creativity and imitation clearer cannot be overemphasized. To explore the concept of plagiarism in the music industry, this paper examines the legal challenges faced by composers and performers, as well as resources that are available for detecting and preventing plagiarism. It also highlights the consequences of plagiarism and the importance of adhering to intellectual property laws. A qualitative analysis of notable plagiarism cases in the music industry was carried out. Results from this study will be beneficial in educating musicians on how to prioritize ethical practices in an era when music compositions and performances are easily accessible.
