Teamwork in Sports: The Importance of Team Cohesion and the Role of Coaches in Fostering Collaboration
Subject area: Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities · Area of research: Humanities
Abstract
Teamwork is a critical determinant of success in sports, where collective performance often outweighs individual talent. This article explores the psychological and structural foundations of effective team collaboration, emphasizing the concept of team cohesion as both a task-related and social construct. It highlights the role of coaches as key agents in fostering unity, trust, and communication among athletes through transformational leadership and structured interventions. Drawing on established theoretical models and empirical evidence, the paper presents strategies for enhancing group dynamics, including role clarity, inclusive decision-making, and conflict resolution. The findings suggest that sustained team performance is deeply rooted in social cohesion and the deliberate cultivation of a collaborative environment led by coaches.
