This study evaluates solid waste management practices and the role of responsible agencies in Keffi Local Government Area (KELGA). Data were collected using 300 structured questionnaires distributed randomly among household heads and informal waste collectors alongside oral interviews with staff of the Nasarawa State Waste Management and Sanitation Authority (NASWAMSA). Descriptive statistical analysis was used to present the findings. Results indicate that socio-economic factors such as educational levels, monthly income and family size significantly influence the quantity of waste generated. The study revealed that 67% of the waste is biodegradable, with kitchen waste accounting for 38.3%, while 33% is non-biodegradable. The average waste generation rate is 0.61 kg per capita per day. Waste collection occurs mostly once a week (48.3%) and in some cases, waste remains uncollected for more than a week (14.7%), posing health risks. Interviews with NASWAMSA staff revealed the agency is responsible only for the collection, transportation, and disposal of waste to the approved sites excluding waste treatment. Its limited effectiveness is attributed to inadequate equipment, lack of trained personnel, insufficient funding and poor public attitude toward waste management. The study recommends enhanced community participation, mandatory household payments for waste disposal, increased public-private partnerships, better funding and resourcing of waste management agencies, improved monitoring and supervision, adoption of an Integrated Solid Waste Management Model, and the application of appropriate technologies to improve overall waste management in KELGA.
