Abstract

Affecting people from all ages and socioeconomic levels, dental caries is still one of the most common non-communicable disorders worldwide. The demineralisation of tooth enamel and dentin as a result of the metabolic activity of dental biofilm microorganisms is a complex, progressive, and avoidable oral disease. This narrative review aims to investigate the epidemiology, aetiology, worldwide burden, and preventive measures related to dental caries, emphasising differences between populations and geographical areas. The review compiles population-based studies, epidemiological reports, and worldwide health surveys among other published literature. Studies using standardised indices like the Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index to evaluate caries experience and frequency took the front stage. Age, tooth shape, saliva composition, microbial activity, diet, especially sugar intake, and time are among the several host and environmental factors influencing dental caries. Variations in prevalence abound; larger burdens are noted in environments lacking resources. Effective preventive strategies include water fluoridation, use of fluoride-containing products, dietary counselling, dental hygiene education, fissure sealants, and newly proposed probiotics. Effective control is hampered, nevertheless, by differences in access and awareness. Reducing the load of dental caries calls for a multifarious public health strategy including early identification, community-based prevention, and education. Particularly in underprivileged areas, policymakers and healthcare experts must cooperate to increase oral health knowledge and access to preventative care.
