Water is a renewable resource and a universal solvent. This unique property of water makes it susceptible to various pollutants. Most of the water bodies are polluted in Kerala. The water pollution directly affects the aquatic flora and fauna and leads to their extinction or they become endangered. The fish under the study Channa punctatus was available abundantly in the water bodies of Kerala, now become endangered. In this context, the present study was undertaken to investigate the impact of commonly used pesticide carbaryl (Sevin) on fresh water fish Channa punctatus. In the present investigation, the fish exposed to different concentration of pesticides and exposure times. Bioassay data on 24hr, 48hr, 72hr and 96 hrs of LC10, LC50, LC90 and 95% confidence limit for the percentage of mortality (%) of ten fishes exposed to different concentration of Sevin were taken. The Rate of opercular movement per minutes in Channa punctatus exposed to Sevin was also studied. In the present study Channa punctatus show unequivocal changes in its opercular movements and surfacing frequency on exposure to Sevin.
