Abstract

The abrupt transition to remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly altered employee work patterns, establishing remote work as the new norm in the Information Technology industry. Developed countries, particularly the USA, have effectively leveraged advancements in technology and cloud computing to maximize the benefits of remote work. Hybrid or remote work arrangements have become preferred employment models for attracting global talent. Research indicates that remote work presents both advantages and challenges for employees. Many remote workers report increased job satisfaction and enhanced performance; however, there are also potential risks to their physical and mental health. This study aims to investigate the impact of remote work on employee productivity and well-being within the IT sector in the USA. A qualitative research approach was employed, utilizing interviews and open-ended surveys to gather the data. The focus was on the long-term effects of remote work on employee well-being and productivity, considering factors such as remote working hours, stress levels, physical activity, mental health, satisfaction and social engagement. The qualitative data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis consist of codes. The research finding indicates that the employee experience in remote work varies based on age, gender and organisational role. A limitation of the study may be the sample size, in terms of the number and category of participants. The outcome of this research will provide organizations with valuable insights into how remote work influences employee productivity and well-being, enabling them to refine their remote work policies and practices. Additionally, this study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on remote work and offer recommendations for IT organizations to enhance its effectiveness and promote employee well-being.
