This study investigated the influence of AI on science and technology reporting in Akwa Ibom State. The objectives were to examine how science and technology reporters in Akwa Ibom State used Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their science and technology reporting, assess the potential effects of AI in curbing barriers to effective science and technology reporting in Akwa Ibom State, evaluate the influence of AI on the quality of science and technology reporting, as well as identify the factors hindering the effective adoption of AI in science and technology reporting within the state. This study adopted a survey research design. The population consisted of 605 registered journalists in Uyo Metropolis. The sample size was calculated using Taro Yamane’s formula, resulting in a sample size of 399 journalists. Purposive sampling was used for this study. The study found that journalists in Akwa Ibom State are actively using AI tools, with 59.6% of respondents incorporating AI into their work. 25.2% of the journalists use AI primarily for automated content creation and 22.8% of them use it for fact-checking. 34.5% of journalists believe AI helps overcome lack of reliable data. 30% of journalists believe that the use of AI saves time of researching for information. 57.3% of journalists who participated in the study reported that proper use of AI enhances reporting quality; though 45.4% of them were neutral regarding the impact of AI on creativity of journalists using it. Lack of adequate training for the use of AI for journalism by media houses was the main barrier of adopting these tools. Therefore, this study recommends that media organisations in Akwa Ibom state should promote the adoption of AI tools by providing journalists with targeted training and resources. By incorporating AI technologies, journalists can streamline data collection, improve information access, and manage reporting tasks more effectively.
