Abstract

This study examines carefully the public insight of the projects and socio-cultural events sponsored by MTN and GLOBACOM that is tailored towards reducing the negative impact of their activities in Rivers State. It also explores the strategies adopted by both telecommunication industries in achieving the cooperate social responsibility goals in Rivers State. The stakeholders and system theory was utilized in this study. The research design employed in the study was the Survey Research method and the research instruments were questionnaire and the interview schedule. The population of the study comprises of all male/ female, adults and adolescents from the selected six Local Government Areas. From the findings of this study, it was revealed that both telecommunication industries have corporate social responsibility initiatives that are put in place as a way of giving back to the people of River State but however, their actual practices is considered inadequate to the people of Rivers State. When it comes to health care services in Rivers State, MTN had a better record than GLOBACOM. MTN and GLOBACOM performed poorly when it comes to educational and social amenities. Findings further shows that GLOBACOM made a great Impact by performing greatly when it comes to sponsoring of socio-cultural events and adopting a more adequate strategy of relating to the people in their host communities. Hence GLOBACOM image and reputation were better rated in Rivers State than MTN. Based on the findings, it was recommended that MTN and GLOBACOM should improve on their corporate social responsibility practices by providing more projects in Rivers State especially in areas like building classroom blocks, renovations of schools and sponsoring of educational programmes. MTN should also learn to consult various stakeholders as a strategy of creating a more positive image while GLOBACOM on the other hand is required to pay more attention in areas of health or sponsoring health programmes.
