Abstract

Power losses have become a common issue in modern distribution networks, often resulting in instability and inefficient power delivery to consumers. This study focuses on the reconfiguration of the Malali 11kV distribution feeder in Kaduna Metropolis, Nigeria, with the primary objective of minimizing technical power losses and enhancing the effective utilization of supplied energy. Whale Optimization Algorithm was utilized to achieve the network’s optimal reconfiguration. Malali’s 34 – bus network was employed as a study area, with network data sourced from appropriate authorities. The operational conditions of the feeder was analyzed using the N – R Load Flow techniques implemented in MATLAB, 2021. Following the reconfiguration, the following lines: lines; 22, 9, 1, 32 & line 6 were removed and substituted with line 35, 36, & 34. Total power loss was significantly reduced from 111.6 kW to 26.13 kW. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the Whale Optimization Algorithm in optimizing distribution feeder configurations and highlight its potential to support the development of a smarter and more efficient electricity distribution system.
