Abstract

Genetically modified (GM) soybeans are increasingly used in agriculture and food industries worldwide. Despite their widespread application, concerns remain regarding their potential metabolic effects, particularly on hepatic function. This study evaluates the effects of GM soybeans on liver enzyme activity and antioxidant status in albino rats. Twenty-four male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups and fed different dietary formulations over 28 days, a control diet, a non-GM soybean diet, a low-dose GM soybean diet, and a high-dose GM soybean diet. At the end of the experimental period, serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and key antioxidant markers such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), and catalase (CAT) were analyzed. The findings indicated a dose-dependent alteration in the biochemical parameters, with elevated liver enzymes and reduced antioxidant levels observed in rats exposed to high GM soybean content. These results suggest potential hepatotoxic and oxidative effects associated with prolonged consumption of genetically modified soybeans. The study highlights the need for rigorous toxicological evaluation of GM foods to ensure public health safety.
