Abstract

The first quarter of the 21st century has been a period of rapid reconfiguration in international commerce. Technological advances (AI, digital platforms, blockchain, fintech), geopolitical friction (great-power competition, sanctions, export controls), regional trade architecture (RCEP, CPTPP), and new regulatory priorities (carbon pricing, data governance) have combined to reshape how goods, services, capital, and data move across borders. This article traces those transformations, examines sectoral case studies (semiconductors, rare earths, trade finance), evaluates implications for developing and advanced economies, and offers policy guidance for businesses and governments aiming to thrive in an increasingly fragmenting but digitally enabled global economy.
