Abstract

This article examines the role of digital transformation in restructuring Nigeria's grain export market and enhancing its global competitiveness, focusing on pivotal commodities like maize and sorghum. Historically, the sector has been severely hindered by endemic supply chain fragmentation, high logistics costs (estimated to cost the economy billions annually), and a profound compliance and traceability deficit , which restricted exports primarily to informal regional markets. Employing a comparative analysis of pre- and post-digitization trends, this research investigates the functional necessity of digital trade platforms, including e-commerce, Agri-tech Operating Systems (AOS), and specialized logistics software, in resolving these persistent structural impediments. Findings demonstrate that the adoption of integrated digital solutions is critical for establishing digital trust and achieving measurable efficiency gains. Agri-tech platforms empower smallholder farmers, facilitating crucial market access and reducing transaction costs by up to 40%, leading to an average 30% increase in revenue. Furthermore, the strategic deployment of electronic certification (ePhyto) and traceability technologies (such as Blockchain) directly addresses stringent international Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) compliance requirements, fundamentally transforming the quality perception of Nigerian grains. Institutional digitalization of trade infrastructure, notably the implementation of a Port Community System (PCS) and automated truck systems , provides the necessary logistics resilience that has already contributed to substantial growth in non-oil exports. The study concludes that digital transformation is structurally necessary to move Nigeria?s grain sector from a high-risk commodity supplier to a reliable global competitor, yet its scaling is critically dependent on bridging the enduring urban-rural digital infrastructure divide.
