Abstract

This research explores the integration of nature-based design principles within academic library settings across Nigerian university campuses in the Southwest region. The investigation examines how incorporating environmental elements, including daylight optimization, vegetation integration, and natural ventilation systems, affects library users' academic engagement and psychological wellness. A mixed-methods research framework was employed, gathering data from 280 participants across four selected institutions using Slovin's sampling formula from a population of 5,600 users. Field investigations covered libraries at Federal University of Technology Akure, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Ogbomoso, University of Lagos, and Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta. Findings indicated that daylight exposure (58.6%), plant installations (49.3%), and exterior learning zones (46.3%) represented the most prevalent nature-inspired features. Users reported enhanced emotional states (29.5%), improved task performance (26.3%), and elevated comfort levels (24.8%) as primary advantages. Thematic examination identified infrastructural constraints, limited stakeholder awareness, and financial limitations as predominant implementation barriers. Weighted mean analysis revealed that natural element comfort (3.38) achieved the highest user impact rating. The research proposes a comprehensive framework for integrating environmental design strategies to enhance user experience and establish a benchmark for sustainable academic infrastructure development at LAUTECH College of Agriculture, Iseyin.
