Performance Evaluation of Manual Single-Disc Coffee Pulper

Abstract

Coffee, being a cash crop, is consumed worldwide. Nigeria, being a major producer of coffee, has received widespread recognition for this crop while still reaping significant financial benefits. With a total of $89.10 million in earnings in 2024, Nigeria has emerged as a leading player in the international coffee market. Despite these earnings, several studies have concluded that Nigeria is not fully maximizing its coffee market potential due to certain factors. One of these factors has been poor processing techniques, such as the depulping mechanism. A single-disc coffee depulper, present at CRIN, was used to depulp coffee berries and determine its efficiency. Coffee berries were collected, cleaned, sorted, and depulped using a manual single-disc coffee depulper. Parameters, including pulped coffee berries, unpulped coffee berries, feeding rate, broken coffee beans, total chaff, chaff in pulped coffee beans, and quantity of material out of the second outlet, were collected and recorded. These parameters were used to determine the bean chaff ratio, pulping efficiency, pulping capacity, unpulped loss, mechanical damage, and separation efficiency. The pulping efficiency of the machine is 68.15%, with a maximum pulping capacity of 86.73kg/min, unpulped loss of 9.7%, mechanical damage of 10.19%, and separation efficiency of 78.2%. It was concluded that the machine is suitable for small coffee processors but requires modification for large-scale coffee processors.
