An Experimental Study of Mobile Networks in Nigeria to Know the Quality of Service.

Abstract

This paper focused on the experimental study of mobile networks in Nigeria to know the quality of service/ . The measuring equipment used in collecting data is the QVOICE monitoring equipment as shown in Figure 1. It has four mobile phones which are Nokia 6230i with serial numbers ranging from 85-92 used for channel identification. The measurement drive test was conducted in Lagos State of Nigeria. QVOICE is the measurement tool used to conduct the drive test.. The capability of the measuring equipment QVoice include call statistics i.e connection setup, call drop handover request, received signal level. Before the drive test, planning of the routes to be followed was done using the MapInfo tool integrated in QVoice software. The result gotten indicated that it was noticed that Call Setup advancement of service providers like Mobile Telecommunication network (MTN), Global communication network (GLOBACOM) , and Airtel were very near the starting point (threshold) which is 98% with Airtel having the most reliable performance. The Call drop rate of service providers like Global communication network, 9mobile and Airtel were discovered to be excellently good showing there was a very little congestion as at the period of experiment. In CCR, 9mobile (Etisalat) performed below average.
