Abstract

Fast dissolving oral films (FDOFs) are an innovative drug-delivery system designed to improve patient compliance, particularly among pediatric, geriatric, and dysphagic patients who face difficulty swallowing conventional solid dosage forms. These thin polymeric films rapidly disintegrate in the oral cavity without the need for water, providing quick onset of action and enhanced bioavailability by partially bypassing first-pass metabolism. The present study focuses on understanding the formulation aspects of FDOFs, including the role of polymers, plasticizers, and other excipients in determining the mechanical strength, disintegration time, and drug-release profile of the films. Various technologies and applications of oral films were reviewed to highlight their advantages, limitations, and future potential in drug delivery.
