Abstract

This research examines the Nigerian Foreign Service’s role in advancing the country’s foreign policy and enhancing its international standing. The study explores the structural and functional aspects of the Foreign Service, highlighting its contributions to diplomacy, economic relations, and regional stability. Key challenges identified include inadequate funding, political interference, and limited training opportunities, which restrict the Foreign Service’s ability to fully support Nigeria’s international goals. Using a qualitative research approach with a historical case study design, the study provides insights into how reforms grounded in New Public Management (NPM) principles could address these issues. Specifically, recommendations are made to increase funding consistency, reduce political influence, and enhance training to improve efficiency and responsiveness. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on strengthening Nigeria’s global diplomatic influence and offers actionable recommendations for policy makers, industry leaders, and researchers aiming to optimize Nigeria’s foreign policy outcomes.
