Curricular Integration of Graphic Design and Architecture: Application to the Department of Architecture, University of Abuja, Nigeria

Abstract

Architecture education demands not only technical and spatial skills but also proficiency in visual communication. Graphic design provides essential tools for enhancing architectural representation, conceptualization, and professional presentation. This study investigates the integration of graphic design into the architecture curriculum at the University of Abuja, Nigeria. Employing a mixed-methods approach, curriculum documents, student surveys (n=100), and faculty interviews (n=10) were analyzed. Results reveal limited integration of graphic design beyond foundational courses, with students reporting low confidence in advanced visualization skills. A circular framework is proposed to scaffold graphic design skills progressively across the curriculum, aligning pedagogy with international best practices. The study highlights the importance of structured interdisciplinary instruction, digital literacy, and assessment strategies that enhance graduate employability, creative thinking, and visual communication proficiency.
