Sustainable development of athletes is a key area that needs to be explored for the growth and development of football in Nigeria. Although Nigeria has always been renowned for its production of quality football talents who have competed well nationally and internationally, there is still much more to be done in terms of addressing the problems that hinder the development of these youths. The present research aims to explore the effects of talent identification and development strategies on sustainable development in youth football in Nigeria. The study draws on various pieces of literature that pertain to issues such as talent identification, long-term athlete development, grassroot football, football academies, and youth development frameworks to determine whether structured strategies have been effective in creating sustainable development in youth football in Nigeria. According to the research findings, sustainable talent development strategies rely heavily on grassroot football initiatives, football academies, education structures, coaching, and collaboration among stakeholders. It has further been determined that sustainable development of athletes requires development programs to adopt athlete-centric approaches in promoting performance and personal development of their wards. Still, there are issues like lack of proper infrastructure, coaching standards, lack of funds, lack of coherent development system, and lack of educational support that continue to slow down the process. Learning lessons from other successful football development systems across the globe shows the need for having an effective system of pathways, learning, involving all stakeholders and ensuring holistic welfare of athletes. In conclusion, it is necessary for Nigeria to develop sustainable pathways for the young athletes within the footballing fraternity of the nation through the collective effort of all stakeholders including the football governing authorities, schools, NGOs, community members, and the family.
