The rapid advancement of digital technologies has transformed traditional business practices and led to the emergence of the digital gig economy, where digital platforms facilitate flexible, on-demand, and task-based employment. Platform business models have become central to this transformation by connecting service providers and consumers through technology-enabled ecosystems, thereby enhancing market efficiency, expanding employment opportunities, and fostering innovation across diverse sectors. This paper provides a conceptual review of the digital gig economy by examining the evolution of platform business models, their key characteristics, and their influence on contemporary market dynamics. The study discusses the economic opportunities created by platform-based businesses, including entrepreneurship, flexible employment, increased market access, and digital inclusion, while also highlighting critical challenges such as income insecurity, lack of social protection, algorithmic management, data privacy concerns, and regulatory issues. The paper further reviews major government initiatives and policy measures that support the development of the digital gig economy in India and explores future prospects in the context of technological advancement and sustainable economic growth. The study concludes that platform business models have significantly reshaped modern markets and will continue to play a crucial role in the future of work and digital commerce. However, achieving sustainable growth will require balanced regulatory frameworks, enhanced digital skills, worker protection, and responsible platform governance.
