A Study on Challenges and Opportunities in Cold Chain Logistics Management: A Study of Snowman Logistics Limited

Abstract

Cold chain logistics has become one of the most important and rapidly expanding segments of modern supply chain management due to the increasing demand for temperature-sensitive products across multiple industries. It plays a crucial role in preserving the quality, safety, nutritional value, and shelf life of perishable commodities by maintaining a continuous temperature-controlled environment from the point of production to the final consumer. The effective functioning of cold chain logistics is essential for industries such as food processing, dairy, fruits and vegetables, meat and seafood, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, healthcare, floriculture, organised retail, and e-commerce. An efficient cold chain system not only reduces product deterioration and post-harvest losses but also enhances customer satisfaction, improves operational efficiency, ensures regulatory compliance, and strengthens the overall performance of the supply chain. With the rapid growth of urbanisation, changing consumer lifestyles, increasing demand for fresh and frozen products, expansion of pharmaceutical manufacturing, and rising healthcare requirements, the significance of cold chain logistics has increased considerably in India over the past decade. Bangalore has emerged as one of India's leading commercial, industrial, and technology centres, creating substantial demand for efficient temperature-controlled logistics services. The city's rapidly growing pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, hospitals, food processing industries, supermarkets, organised retail chains, restaurants, and e-commerce businesses rely heavily on cold chain logistics to maintain product quality and ensure timely deliveries. However, despite significant investments and technological advancements, the industry continues to face several operational challenges, including inadequate cold storage infrastructure, high transportation costs, increasing fuel prices, traffic congestion, inconsistent power supply, equipment maintenance issues, shortage of skilled manpower, and limited adoption of advanced technologies by smaller organisations. These challenges affect the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of cold chain logistics operations and create obstacles to meeting the increasing demand for temperature-controlled supply chain services. The present study focuses on examining the challenges and opportunities associated with cold chain logistics management in Bangalore. The research adopts a descriptive research design to analyse the existing status of cold chain logistics operations and to understand respondents' perceptions regarding infrastructure, transportation, technology adoption, operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, and future growth opportunities. Primary data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 202 respondents associated with cold chain logistics operations, including logistics professionals, warehouse managers, transportation executives, supply chain employees, and customers. Secondary information was collected from books, research journals, industry reports, company publications, government documents, and other reliable academic sources to establish the theoretical foundation of the study. The collected data were analysed using percentage analysis, frequency distribution, mean analysis, correlation analysis, and the Chi-square test to identify significant trends and relationships among the selected variables. The findings of the study reveal that high transportation costs, inadequate cold storage infrastructure, unreliable power supply, and increasing operational expenses remain the major challenges influencing cold chain logistics management in Bangalore. At the same time, the respondents acknowledged that modern technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), GPS-enabled vehicle tracking, Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), cloud-based monitoring, and automated temperature control systems have significantly improved operational efficiency, inventory management, product quality, supply chain visibility, and customer satisfaction. The statistical analysis further indicates a positive relationship between technology adoption and cold chain logistics performance, while respondents also expressed optimistic views regarding the future expansion of the cold chain industry due to increasing demand from pharmaceutical, healthcare, food processing, dairy, organised retail, and e-commerce sectors. The study concludes that strengthening cold chain infrastructure, increasing investment in refrigerated transportation and cold storage facilities, adopting advanced digital technologies, improving workforce skills through regular training programmes, and encouraging collaboration among logistics providers, government agencies, manufacturers, and retailers are essential for improving the efficiency and sustainability of cold chain logistics management in Bangalore. Furthermore, supportive government policies, infrastructure development, technological innovation, and growing market demand present substantial opportunities for the future growth of the cold chain logistics sector. The findings of this research provide practical recommendations for logistics companies, warehouse operators, policymakers, researchers, and industry professionals seeking to improve operational performance, enhance service quality, minimise product losses, and build a more resilient and sustainable cold chain ecosystem in Bangalore.
