Plastic Waste Utilization in Sustainable Construction Materials: A Sustainable Approach for Waste Management and Green Construction
Subject area: Science,Engineering and Technology · Area of research: Plastic Waste Utilization
Abstract
The rapid increase in plastic consumption has resulted in significant environmental challenges due to improper disposal and accumulation of plastic waste. Conventional disposal methods such as landfilling and incineration contribute to environmental degradation and greenhouse gas emissions. The construction industry offers a promising solution through the utilization of plastic waste in building materials. This study reviews the potential of incorporating plastic waste into concrete, asphalt pavements, bricks, blocks, and composite materials. The environmental, economic, and engineering benefits of plastic-modified construction materials are analyzed. Results from previous studies indicate that plastic waste can improve durability, reduce material costs, and minimize environmental pollution while promoting sustainable construction practices. The study concludes that plastic waste utilization can play a significant role in achieving circular economy objectives and reducing the environmental footprint of the construction sector.
Keywords
plastic waste, sustainable construction, green concrete, recycled materials, circular economy, waste management.
