Integrated Sustainable Water Management for Enhancing Water Security in Arid Regions of Rajasthan
Subject area: Science,Engineering and Technology · Area of research: Water Management
Abstract
Water scarcity is one of the most critical environmental and socio-economic challenges in the arid regions of Rajasthan. Low rainfall, high evapotranspiration rates, over-exploitation of groundwater, and increasing water demand have intensified the water crisis. Sustainable water management has become essential to ensure water security, agricultural productivity, and environmental sustainability. This study examines existing water resources, challenges in water management, and sustainable strategies suitable for arid regions of Rajasthan. Various approaches including rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, wastewater reuse, micro-irrigation systems, watershed management, and smart water monitoring technologies are analyzed. The study highlights the importance of integrating traditional water conservation practices with modern technologies to achieve long-term water sustainability. The findings suggest that a combination of decentralized water management, efficient irrigation practices, and community participation can significantly improve water availability and resilience in Rajasthan’s arid regions.
