Educational Inclusion and Psychological Development in Early Childhood: Classroom Participation, Educator Support and Developmental Outcomes Among Neurodivergent Children in Inclusive Early Years Settings

Abstract
Early childhood education occupies a distinctive place within educational psychology because the classroom is not simply a site in which young children acquire pre-academic knowledge. It is one of the first sustained social institutions in which children learn how to regulate attention and emotion, enter and sustain relationships, interpret expectations, communicate preferences, negotiate routines, and experience themselves as competent participants in a community. These developmental processes unfold through repeated interactions with adults, peers, materials and environments. For that reason, the quality of early educational experience cannot be judged solely by enrolment, attendance or curriculum exposure. It must also be judged by whether children are able to participate meaningfully in the social and learning life of the setting. This distinction is central to contemporary inclusion policy, which increasingly frames inclusion as the identification and removal of barriers to participation and learning rather than the physical placement of a child in a common classroom (UNESCO, 2020, 2021). The issue becomes particularly consequential for neurodivergent children. Neurodivergence is used in this thesis as an umbrella term for developmental profiles that differ from dominant neurotypical expectations, including, but not limited to, autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity profiles, developmental language differences, dyslexia-associated profiles, dyspraxia, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and sensory or communication differences. Such children are not a homogeneous group, and diagnostic labels cannot by themselves explain the quality of a child's classroom experience. A child may be present in an inclusive setting and yet remain peripheral to play, group routines, peer interaction or decision-making. Conversely, a child with substantial support needs may participate actively when communication, sensory, relational and instructional conditions are responsive. This ecological understanding is consistent with bioecological theory, which treats development as a product of recurring proximal processes between the developing person and the surrounding environment (Bronfenbrenner & Morris, 2006). A central concern of the present study is therefore the difference between placement and participation. Participation is not treated as a decorative indicator of inclusion; it is conceptualised as a developmental mechanism. Through participation, children encounter opportunities to practise self-regulation, use language and other communication systems, cooperate with peers, initiate activity, recover from frustration, exercise choice, and engage with increasingly complex learning demands. Evidence from early childhood educational settings shows that participation patterns differ for children with and without developmental disabilities and that environmental support can shape the frequency and quality of involvement (Benjamin et al., 2017). Research on inclusive preschool interventions similarly suggests that social communication and peer participation can be strengthened when support is embedded within authentic classroom and play contexts rather than detached from them (Gunning et al., 2019; Hansen et al., 2014; O'Keeffe & McNally, 2023). Educator support is the second organising construct of the thesis. Early years educators control many of the immediate conditions under which children participate: they pace routines, organise space, establish emotional tone, interpret behaviour, scaffold language and play, invite or restrict choice, adapt tasks, mediate peer encounters and decide when support should be increased or faded. A substantial body of research on classroom processes has shown that the quality of teacher-child interaction matters for children's social, language and academic development (Hamre et al., 2013; Mashburn et al., 2008). Within inclusive education, however, general warmth is not enough. Effective support may also require knowledge of neurodevelopment, flexible communication, sensory adaptation, visual structure, differentiated pedagogy, family collaboration, and the capacity to recognise competence that is expressed in non-normative ways. Studies of preschool professional development indicate that educator knowledge and inclusion skills can improve, but also that organisational conditions determine whether new knowledge is translated into sustained practice (Petersson-Bloom & Bölte, 2022). This thesis adopts a neurodiversity-affirming position without romanticising disability or minimising the realities of developmental difficulty. The neurodiversity paradigm challenges research and practice that define success primarily as approximation to neurotypical behaviour. Instead, it directs attention to environmental fit, autonomy, communication access, well-being, strengths, support needs and outcomes that are meaningful to neurodivergent people themselves (den Houting, 2019; Leadbitter et al., 2021; Pellicano & den Houting, 2022). In an early childhood context, this means that participation should not be measured by quiet compliance, eye contact, or imitation of peers alone. A child may participate through movement, alternative communication, parallel play, intense interests, selective engagement or supported transitions. The educational question is not whether difference can be made invisible; it is whether the environment enables the child to belong, contribute, learn and develop without unnecessary barriers. The study is also grounded in a developmental view of self-regulation, social-emotional competence and early learning as interdependent rather than isolated outcomes. Self-regulation enables children to direct attention, manage arousal, inhibit or shift responses, and persist with tasks; these processes are strongly implicated in school readiness and later learning (Blair & Raver, 2015).
