Institutional Variables and Material Waste Reduction Rate in Metalwork Among Technical Students in Nigeria

Abstract

This study investigated institutional variables and material waste reduction rate in metalwork technology among technical students in Calabar Education Zone of Cross River State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study determined the extent to which teachers' attitude to workshop practices, availability of equipment, and institutional support predict material waste reduction rate. An ex-post facto research design was adopted. The population comprised all 142 Senior Technical Two (ST-2) metalwork students in the eleven technical colleges in the zone, and a census of the entire population was used as the sample. Data were collected using a validated, structured questionnaire whose relevant subscales returned Cronbach alpha reliability coefficients of .89 (teachers' attitude), .72 (availability of equipment), .72 (institutional support), and .89 (material waste reduction rate). Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while simple linear regression was used to test the three null hypotheses at .05 level of significance. Results showed that teachers' attitude to workshop practices (F(1,140) = 4.088, p = .045, R² = .028), availability of equipment (F(1,140) = 7.505, p = .007, R² = .051), and institutional support (F(1,140) = 8.241, p = .005, R² = .056) each significantly and positively predicted material waste reduction rate, although each variable individually explained a modest proportion of the variance. The study concludes that institutional variables, particularly teachers' disposition toward workshop supervision, the adequacy of workshop equipment, and the strength of administrative and policy support, are important predictors of how efficiently technical students manage metal materials during practical training. It is recommended that technical colleges invest in teacher motivation and training, upgrade and maintain workshop equipment, and strengthen institutional policies and supervision to enhance material waste reduction in metalwork technology.
