Bacteriological Analysis/Bioburden Evaluation of Bedsheets of Students in Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma

Abstract

This study investigates the bacterial contamination present on bedsheets in a university residential hostel, shedding light on potential health risks associated with this overlooked aspect of communal living. The prevalence of microbial transfer to bedsheets from various sources, including direct contact, is examined. The research also delves into the presence of pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacterial floras on bedsheets and their implications for student health. The study, conducted at Ambrose Alli University's main campus in Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria, involved the collection of samples from 18 students residing in the university hostels. The data obtained from both microbial analysis and questionnaires administered to the students provide a comprehensive overview of bedsheet hygiene practices and potential risks. Results revealed a high prevalence of bacterial contamination, with identified species including Escherichia coli, Bacillus mycoides, Serratia marcescens, and Enterobacter cloacae. These findings underscore the need for improved hygiene practices, such as regular bedsheet changes and thorough laundering, to mitigate potential health risks associated with prolonged microbial exposure. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of awareness campaigns aimed at educating students about the significance of maintaining clean bedsheets. Recommendations for enhancing hygiene in residential hostels are provided, including strategies to reduce bacterial contamination and improve overall cleanliness. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on bioburden assessment and hygiene practices in shared accommodations, emphasizing the critical role of environmental cleanliness in safeguarding student health. The findings offer practical insights for implementing interventions to create a healthier living environment within residential hostels, ultimately promoting the well-being of university students.
