Vocational Education in the 21st Century for Skills Development and Self-Reliance Among Youths

Abstract
This paper discussed education of the 21st century in the area of Vocational Education. It was informed as a result of the hue and cry of the general public over the lingering unemployment issues of young graduates in the society. Literatures were reviewed and a questionnaire tagged ‘handling unemployment issues among the youths’ (HUIAY) was administered to a population of 64 graduates drawn from the researcher’s local community and it was founded that high level of youth unemployment can lead to increased poverty, social unrest, great burden on public resources, can stifle the economy, as well as reduce the interest for education, among others. Recommendations were also made which included: restructuring the curriculum to include more of skills acquisition, training and equipping of teachers to be able to teach the skills, government provision of finance and take-off supports to graduates etc.
