Abstract

The buildings and construction sector accounted for approximately 37% of global CO₂ emissions in 2023, creating an urgent need for Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) in construction. This study develops a GSCM framework for building construction project delivery in South-East Nigeria by identifying and ranking key GSCM components. A structured questionnaire was administered to 890 construction professionals across five states, with 844 valid responses analysed using the Relative Importance Index (RII). The findings reveal five GSCM dimensions: environmental, economic, social/human, operational/technological, and regulatory/policy/strategic. The highest-ranked components were Resource Conservation (ENV, RII = 0.791), Cost-effectiveness of Green Materials (ECO, RII = 0.791), Public Awareness (SOC, RII = 0.724), Green Innovation (OP, RII = 0.796), and International Standards Compliance (RP, RII = 0.746). The study concludes that GSCM in building construction is multidimensional, requiring coordinated attention to environmental, economic, social, operational, and regulatory factors. The framework provides a context-specific evidence base for policymakers, construction professionals, and stakeholders seeking to strengthen sustainable supply-chain practices in South-East Nigeria.
