The Role of SCADA Systems in Improving Operational Efficiency of Oil and Gas Facilities

Mohammed Abdul Lateef

Subject area: Science,Engineering and Technology  ·  Area of research: SCADA Systems

Abstract

Supervisory control and data acquisition systems have become central to the operational performance of oil and gas facilities because they connect field measurements, control logic, alarms, historical records and operator decisions across geographically dispersed assets. This integrative review examines how SCADA improves efficiency through real-time visibility, process stabilization, alarm rationalization, predictive maintenance, energy management, remote operations and evidence-based quality assurance. It also evaluates the conditions that can weaken those benefits, including poor instrumentation, fragmented data models, alarm floods, legacy protocols, inadequate human-machine interfaces and cyber disruption. The review synthesizes recent industrial-control literature and authoritative operational-technology guidance without claiming an exhaustive or statistically complete evidence base. The analysis proposes a performance framework linking data integrity, control effectiveness, asset reliability, operator response and cyber resilience to production, energy, maintenance and safety outcomes. For Saudi oil and gas facilities, the principal implication is that SCADA modernization should be governed as an operational-improvement programme rather than an isolated software upgrade. Benefits depend on validated sensors, disciplined configuration management, interoperable architectures, competent operators and metrics that distinguish genuine process improvement from greater data volume. The resulting framework supports Vision 2030 objectives related to industrial productivity, digital transformation, local capability development and efficient resource utilization.
