Enhancing Oral Recitation Using the Question Wheel Strategy
Subject area: Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities · Area of research: Education
Abstract
This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the Question Wheel Strategy in enhancing Grade 7 students' oral recitation engagement in English classes at a selected public secondary school in Ozamiz City during the school year 2025–2026. The study employed a classroom-based action research design using a single-group pretest–posttest approach. The respondents consisted of thirty-five (35) Grade 7 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were gathered using a researcher-made Student Oral Participation and Engagement Questionnaire that measured students' cognitive engagement, affective engagement, behavioral engagement, and motivation before and after implementing the Question Wheel Strategy. The instrument underwent expert validation and reliability testing using Cronbach's alpha. Data were analyzed using the mean, standard deviation, and paired t-test through JAMOVI. Findings revealed that students' oral recitation engagement before implementing the Question Wheel Strategy was poor, while after the intervention, their engagement significantly improved to an excellent level. Statistical analysis also showed a highly significant difference in students' cognitive engagement, affective engagement, behavioral engagement, and motivation before and after implementing the strategy. The Question Wheel Strategy is an effective instructional approach in improving students' oral recitation engagement, classroom participation, confidence, and motivation during English discussions.
