Abstract

Electric vehicles (EVs) are increasingly adopted due to their high efficiency, low emissions, and sustainable transportation benefits. However, one of the major challenges faced by EVs is reduced startup performance, particularly in the low-speed range of 0-30 km/h. This limitation arises because conventional battery systems are unable to deliver very high instantaneous current during vehicle launch, resulting in lower initial torque and sluggish acceleration. Such behaviour negatively affects rider experience, especially in urban traffic conditions where rapid and responsive take-off is essential. This paper presents an innovative startup torque-boosting system designed to enhance the launch performance of electric vehicles without compromising battery safety or reliability. The proposed system provides a controlled high-power surge for a very short duration of 50–100 milliseconds during vehicle startup. This temporary boost supplies additional current to the motor, significantly increasing the available electromagnetic torque and improving vehicle responsiveness. The system is automatically activated through a push-button trigger and is governed by a precision timer circuit that disables the boost after the predefined interval, ensuring a seamless transition back to normal battery operation with no noticeable interruption to the rider. To manage the high transient current, the design incorporates high-current MOSFET-based switching devices with fast response characteristics and low conduction losses. Advanced current-limiting and protection circuits are implemented to prevent excessive battery stress, overcurrent conditions, and thermal overload.
