Abstract

This action research examined the effectiveness of Symbol Hunt activities in enhancing Grade 7 students’ understanding of symbolism and allegorical meanings in Ibong Adarna. The study employed a one-group pretest–posttest design involving 43 Grade 7 students from a public secondary school in Misamis Occidental during the School Year 2025–2026. A validated 40-item researcher-made test measured students' comprehension before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the mean, standard deviation, and paired-samples t-test. Results revealed that students initially demonstrated a low level of understanding. After implementing Symbol Hunt activities, students' performance improved significantly to an outstanding level. The computed t-value of 31.48 and p-value < 0.001 indicated a highly significant difference between pretest and posttest scores, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis. The findings suggest that Symbol Hunt activities are highly effective in promoting students' critical thinking, engagement, and deeper interpretation of literary texts. The study recommends integrating interactive, student-centered strategies in literature instruction to enhance students' comprehension of symbolism and allegory.
