The choice of accommodation is a critical aspect of staff welfare that significantly impacts productivity, satisfaction, and overall well-being. In Ozoro community, Delta State, Nigeria, where various organizations employ a diverse workforce, understanding the determinants that influence staff members' accommodation choices is essential for effective housing policy and development. This study investigates the typologies of accommodation available to staff, examines the impact of accommodation on staff performance, and identifies key determinants influencing their housing preferences. Drawing insights from literature and related empirical studies across Nigerian tertiary institutions, the research identifies proximity to workplace, affordability, safety, accessibility, and availability of amenities as significant influencing factors. The study highlights the need for employer-supported housing schemes and informed policy decisions that align with the housing needs of the workforce in Ozoro. This study assessed the housing conditions and accommodation preferences of academic staff at Southern Delta University, Ozoro, Delta State, Nigeria. The research employed a survey method with 300 academic staff as respondents. Findings revealed a predominance of male staff (83.3%), with most respondents being Assistant Lecturers and early-career staff serving for less than two years. The majority of respondents earn below ?200,000 monthly, influencing their preference for affordable housing types such as room-and-parlour self-contains and 2-bedroom flats. Security, cost of accommodation, proximity to the workplace, and availability of social amenities emerged as the key factors influencing accommodation choices. A notable proportion of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of housing in Ozoro due to issues such as high rent, poor aesthetics, lack of basic amenities, and agent-related challenges. However, 60% rated their eventual accommodation as good. A significant 56.7% showed interest in on-campus staff housing as a solution to accommodation challenges. The study underscores the urgent need for institutional housing support and policy intervention to improve living conditions for university staff.
