Abstract

Transport is a critical element in the socio-economic development of any nation. One vital way cities develop has been linked to free movement to enhance economic activities, which can easily be boosted by good traffic flow. A meaningful development cannot occur in a society without a proper transportation network, which involves the connectivity of all transportation mediums to aid the movement of goods and services. This is not the case with the Lagos-Apapa Motorway, which is notable for housing one of the busiest ports in Africa. In the 1950s and 1980s, Apapa was popularly known as a highbrow area in metropolitan Lagos for its usual commercial activities. However, the transportation network soon collapsed in literal terms due to the deterioration and lack of maintenance of the available railway transportation infrastructure, which was initially designed to ferry large consignment of goods to other parts of the country, which has thus constituted a problem for the highways that link into the port as vehicle are now left with the option trucks using trucks and containers, which has therefore, resulted to incessant parking and the deterioration of the entire road infrastructure. This write-up is consequently aimed at identifying the causes of perennial gridlock on the Lagos-Apapa Motorway, to identify the socio-economic and social impact of the gridlock on the residents, state, and nation, to come up with a model aimed at solving the identified problems and further recommending to governments and their stakeholders' practical implementation measures and policy actions to circumvent the challenges. The write-up recommends the adoption of regional terminals, among other measures, to help mitigate the incessant traffic gridlock on the road, which will further save the state from the disaster of constant loss of life.
