The Use of Nanoparticles for Enhanced Heavy Crude Oil Recovery
Subject area: Science,Engineering and Technology · Area of research: Reservoir Engineering
Abstract
Heavy crude is a type of crude oil possessing a high viscosity and density. It is usually produced from oil sands, and as the name suggests, it is heavy and hard to extract. It is referred to as “heavy” because it has a higher specific gravity and is also much denser when compared with conventional (light) crude. Although some variations still exist, heavy oil is classified as crude with API gravity less than 200. Light crude oil primarily produces fuels such as gasoline, diesel and aviation fuels, heavy crude (which also yields these transportation fuels) also provides feed stock for plastics, petrochemicals and road surfacing to name a few, therefore it is safe to say adequate heavy crude oil investment is necessary for the security of the oil and gas industry. Compared to its lighter counterpart, there is more unexploited heavy crude oil reserves around the world with several reasons responsible, most of which are associated with the difficulty encountered in recovering these heavy crude oils.
