Abstract

The study examined the structure and profitability of broiler and layer poultry marketing in Anambra State, Nigeria. It specifically described the socio-economic characteristics of the marketers; market structure and conducts; examined costs and returns of the marketers, and identified constraints to marketing of the products. Multi-stage, purposive and sampling techniques were used to select 104 (52 broiler and 52 layer) marketers. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaire administered to the respondents by personal interview. Descriptive and inferential statistical tools were used for data analyses. Finding showed female dominance of 75% and 69.2%, mean ages of 37 and 41 years; mean educational years of 15.2 and 15.4; mean years of experience of 22.6 and 21.1 and average family size of 6 persons each for thw broiler and layer poultry marketers respectively. A fairly competitive market with Gini coefficient values of 0.38 and 0.45 were recorded for the broiler and layer poultry markets respectively. Market conduct indicated that majority (76.9% and 75.0%) of broiler and layer marketers obtained their fund from personal savings. Most of the broiler and layer marketers used bus to convey their products (65.4% and 53.8%) and marketing information was obtained from fellow marketers (53.8% and 46.11%) respectively. Broiler and layer poultry marketing was profitable given the positive values of gross margin, net marketing income, mean net marketing income and net return on investment of N18,439,950, N15,336,750, N295,514.4 and 0.43 for broiler and N11,300,110, N9,091,520, N174,826.9 and 0.31 for layer marketers, implying that the broiler marketers made more profit than the layer marketers. The constraints to constraints to marketing of the products in descending order of seriousness were high cost of transportation, price fluctuations, inadequate capital, high cost of feed and high cost of chicks. Provision of financial assistance to marketers through formation of co-operative groups and also construction of good road networks by the Government will ease their capital constraints and enable easy movement of the products thus improve the profit realized by the marketers.
