Serverless computing has emerged as a transformative paradigm in cloud computing, offering scalable and cost-effective solutions for modern software deployment. This systematic review investigates the intersection of serverless architectures and business process optimization, aiming to identify trends, benefits, challenges, and best practices. The review synthesizes findings from peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and white papers published between 2018 and 2021. The study evaluates how serverless technologies—primarily Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) platforms such as AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, and Google Cloud Functions—are being applied to streamline business operations, enhance agility, and reduce operational overhead. The review categorizes findings across sectors including e-commerce, financial services, healthcare, and logistics, emphasizing the role of serverless models in automating workflows, enabling real-time analytics, and accelerating digital transformation. Key enabling technologies such as API gateways, event-driven architectures, microservices, and cloud-native tools are discussed in the context of process orchestration and optimization. A thematic analysis reveals that serverless adoption contributes to increased operational efficiency, reduced infrastructure management burdens, and improved time-to-market for digital solutions. However, the review also highlights persistent concerns related to cold starts, vendor lock-in, and monitoring complexities. Moreover, the review identifies a growing trend toward hybrid serverless models, where organizations blend traditional and serverless components to balance flexibility and control. The findings underscore the strategic importance of serverless architectures in driving process innovation, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises seeking agility without heavy infrastructure investments. Best practices for implementation include modular design, effective resource governance, and the use of observability tools to ensure performance and reliability. This systematic review contributes to both academic and industry discourse by providing a comprehensive overview of serverless computing’s potential in business process optimization. It concludes with recommendations for future research directions, such as improving serverless orchestration mechanisms and exploring integration with AI-driven decision-making systems.
