Abstract

Educational inequity remains a pressing issue in underserved communities, where students face significant barriers to academic success, social development, and college enrollment. Mentoring programs in high schools have proven to be a powerful intervention to bridge this gap. This paper reviews the role of structured mentoring programs in addressing these disparities, examining their impact on academic performance, social and emotional development, and college readiness. Additionally, it explores the challenges these programs face, including funding constraints, scalability issues, and mentor training. Strategies for overcoming these barriers and future opportunities for expanding mentoring efforts to close the educational equity gap are discussed. The review highlights the importance of public-private partnerships, tailored mentoring approaches, and technology integration as key to ensuring the sustainability and effectiveness of mentoring programs in underserved communities. By empowering students through mentorship, these programs play a crucial role in fostering a more equitable and inclusive education system.
