This study examines the funding models and research output of public universities in South West Nigeria, focusing on the interrelationship between financial resources and research activities. The study explores various funding sources, including government allocations, internal revenue generation, and external grants, while assessing their impact on research quality and quantity. Data were collected from five public universities in the region through surveys and interviews with administrators, faculty members and policymakers. Findings indicate that while government funding remains the primary source of financial support, the dependency on this funding model has limited public universities’ ability to consistently produce high-quality research. Additionally, the study reveals a growing reliance on partnerships with international organizations and the private sector to supplement research funding. The study also highlights challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, low staff remuneration, and limited access to research grants, which hinder optimal research output. This study concludes by recommending strategies to diversify funding sources, improve institutional research management, and enhance collaboration between public universities and other research stakeholders, to promote sustainable academic growth in South West Nigeria.
