The paper examined professional development of biology teachers on inquiry teaching method in Nigeria. The paper examined what inquiry-based teaching is all about, that is a teaching strategy which is learner-centered and focuses on investigation of phenomena rather than mastery of content as the traditional approach. This paper also highlighted how biology teachers can be professionally trained through continuous specialized inquiry-based method. The current methods biology teachers use in teaching was also examining which include: transmission of information to the learners, emphasis on knowledge rather than process and attitude. Suggestions were proffered on how to develop an effective professional development progamme that will be responsive to a wide range of teachers and one that will have a longer impact on the teachers. This paper enumerated some benefits of inquiry-based teaching which includes: collaboration and team work among learners. The challenges often associated with inquiry teaching were considered, particularly the intensive and expensive nature of the method. This paper was concluded by looking at the nature of inquiry teaching and recommendations were made for future consideration.
